Anhydrous Copper Sulphate BP
Ph Eur
CuSO4
159.6 --7758-98-7

DEFINITION
Content: 99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent (dried substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: Greenish-grey powder, very hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent).

IDENTIFICATION
A. Add several drops of dilute ammonia to 1 ml of solution S (see Tests). A blue precipitate is formed. On further addition of dilute ammonia the precipitate dissolves and a dark blue colour is produced.
B. Loss on drying (see Tests).
C. Dilute 1 ml of solution S to 5 ml with water. The solution gives reaction (a) of sulphates.

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 1.6 g in water R and dilute to 50 ml with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear.
Lead: Maximum 80.0 ppm.
Atomic absorption spectrometry: To pass the the test.
Loss on drying: Maximum 1.0 per cent, determined on 0.500 g by drying in an oven at 250 ± 10°C.

ASSAY
Dissolve 0.125 g in 50 ml of water R. Add 2 ml of sulphuric acid R and 3 g of potassium iodide. Titrate with 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate, using 1 ml of starch solution R, added towards the end of the titration.
1 ml of 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate is equivalent to 15.96 mg of CuSO4.

Cupric Chloride USP

CuCl2·2H2O 170.48
Copper chloride (CuCl2) dihydrate.
Copper(2+) chloride dihydrate [10125-13-0].
Anhydrous 134.45 [7447-39-4].

Cupric Chloride contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than 100.5 percent of CuCl2, calculated on the dried basis.

Identification: A solution (1 in 20) responds to the tests for Chloride and for Copper.
Loss on drying: Dry it at 105 for 16 hours: it loses between 20.9% and 21.4% of its weight. Insoluble matter— Transfer 10 g to a 250-mL beaker, add 100 mL of water and 2 mL of hydrochloric acid, cover the beaker, and heat to boiling. Digest the hot solution on a steam bath for 1 hour, and filter through a tared, fine-porosity filtering crucible. Rinse the beaker with hot water, passing the rinsings through the filter, and finally wash the filter with additional hot water. [note—Retain the combined filtrate and washings for the test for Sulfate.] Dry the filter at 105: the residue weighs not more than 1.0 mg (0.01%).
Sulfate: Heat to boiling the combined filtrate and washings retained from the test for Insoluble matter, add 10 mL of barium chloride TS, digest for 2 hours on a steam bath, and allow to stand overnight. Filter the solution through a tared, medium-porosity porcelain filtering crucible, and wash the residue with two 10-mL portions of hot water. Ignite at 800 ± 25 to constant weight: the weight of the residue, corrected for the weight obtained in a blank test, does not exceed 1.2 mg (0.005%).
Limit of sodium: The limit is 0.02%.
Limit of potassium: The limit is 0.01%.
Limit of calcium: The limit is 0.005%.
Limit of iron: The limit is 0.005%.
Limit of nickel: The limit is 0.01%.
Assay: Transfer about 400 mg of Cupric Chloride, accurately weighed, to a beaker, and dissolve in 50 mL of water. Add 4 mL of acetic acid and 3 g of potassium iodide, mix, and titrate the liberated iodine with 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate VS, adding about 2 g of potassium thiocyanate and 3 mL of starch TS as the endpoint is approached. Each mL of 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate is equivalent to 13.45 mg of CuCl2.
